OVNIs : Noël 1972-mars 1973, la "Chose" du Lac Clearwater du Missouri

Encore issu de mes vieilles archives, cet article est malheureusement incomplet (la fin a été égarée ou jamais possédée, allez savoir !), j'ai donc fait des recherches sur internet pour voir s'il y en avait quelques autres références... et, en effet, j'ai trouvé quelques références mentionnant cette étrange affaire, en date de décembre 1972 pour ses origines, mais dont on retrouve des ramifications jusqu'en février 1973... En voilà d'abord le texte, car le document général est un peu jauni et fatigué, avec un texte assez petit, puis les documents originaux ensuite, sous forme de photos, et pour finir les autres références trouvées sur internet :

" La voiture roulait à tombeau ouvert sur la route déserte. La nuit était opaque, sans lune. Reggie Bone se pencha vers sa femme Mary, qui commençait à s'endormir sur son épaule :

- Il est deux heures et demie, dans dix minutes, nous serons arrivés.

A cet instant précis, les phares éclairèrent la plus insolite des apparitions : le long de la route, marchait une créature de petite taille, revêtue d'une tenue de scaphandrier et tenant quelque chose à la main.

" Je regardai ma femme, puis mes autres passagers, devait raconter Reggie Bone. Nous étions tellement ahuris que nous n'avons même pas songé à nous arrêter. "

Les faits remontent à Noël 1972. Reggie Bone, entraîneur d'une équipe scolaire de basket à Piedmont (Missouri, USA) et ses passagers revenaient de la messe de minuit. Quelques heures auparavant, dans la même région, un pilote d'avion de tourisme, Kenneth Pingle, avait été témoin d'un phénomène non moins étrange.

" J'étais avec un ami à qui je donnais des leçons de pilotage. Nous allions nous poser sur l'aéroport de Farmington : soudain, nous aperçûmes cette " chose " dans le ciel, qui semblait nous suivre à une distance respectable. C'était un objet de forme circulaire, dont la couleur, d'abord blanche, devint graduellement jaune, puis orange. Je décidai d'aller voir de plus près de quoi il s'agissait, et dirigeai mon appareil vers l'objet. La chose s'éloigna à une vitesse vertigineuse, et disparut en quelques secondes. "

D'autres phénomènes curieux furent encore observés, non loin de là, pendant ce week-end de Noël 1972. Deux jeunes femmes, Cathy Leach et Jean Coleman, passaient près du lac de Clearwater quand elles virent " l'eau prendre une teinte rougeâtre " puis un " objet en forme de disque apparaître à la surface ".

L'engin était totalement silencieux. Il s'élança dans les airs, et disparut derrière les montagnes. De son côté, un groupe de scouts qui campait au bord du lac, avait vu un objet brillant, de forme circulaire, glisser le long de la surface de l'eau. Quelques jours plus tard, au même endroit, dans la demi-obscurité du crépuscule, cinq pêcheurs purent observer l'étrange ballet de plusieurs objets, en forme de disque, planant au-dessus de l'eau.

Tous ces témoignages, émanant de personnes qui ne se connaissaient pas, concordaient parfaitement. Mais les autorités de l'Etat du Missouri, d'abord troublées, décidèrent de donner le moins de publicité possible à l'affaire, afin d'éviter toute panique.

Les Dossiers Secrets

Moins de trois mois après, les phénomènes du lac de Clearwater reprenaient de plus belle. Le dimanche 11 mars 1973, dans l'après-midi, deux promeneurs, MM Bruce Barry et Rick Johnson, virent l'eau du lac " entrer dans une sorte d'ébullition ". Le même jour, un journaliste de la radio de Piedmont, qui passait non loin de là en voiture, aperçut " quelque chose " volant au-dessus de la route : " Mon poste de radio tomba en panne... la " chose " continuait à s'approchait de la voiture... puis, ce fut mon moteur qui s'arrêta. Enfin, l'objet s'éloigna, alors, tout redevint normal. "

Même le chef de la police locale, Gene Bearden, finit par admettre la réalité des phénomènes. " Chaque fois que nous avions des problèmes avec nos postes de radio, nous savions que l'un de ces satanés engins volait dans le coin. " Les programmes de télévision étaient troublés de la même manière.

A l'époque, les commissariats de police de la région furent submergés de témoignages, tous étrangement semblables. La presse locale s'empara de l'affaire, et les journaux de New York et de Los Angeles rapportèrent, avec beaucoup de prudence il est vrai, certains témoignages. Aujourd'hui pourtant, les récentes apparitions d'O.V.N.I, dans le Missouri suscitent un regain d'intérêt, et pour cause : un groupe de savants américains - et non des moindres - vient en effet d'effectuer, sur l'invitation de l'Etat du Missouri, une enquête destinée à déterminer de manière précise ce qui se passa, il y a quelques mois, dans cette région des Etats-Unis. Des témoins ont été interrogés, des dossiers secrets examinés, de nouveaux rapports établis.

Le plus grand spécialiste mondial des soucoupes volantes est formel ( Hayden C. Hewes est le directeur du fameux "International UFO Bureau Inc." ) " Cette nuit-là des êtres venus d'ailleurs ont fait escale sur la Terre ".

Parmi les ensuêteurs, on relève les noms du Dr Allen Hynek, président du département d'astronomie de la Northwestern University, et celui de M. Walter Andrys, directeur du Centre de recherches astronomiques Linheimer. Les savants auraient été très impressionnés, paraît-il, par la solidité de certains témoignages. Parmi ceux-ci, le récit de cinq membres d'une équipe scolaire de basket et de leur entraîneur, Reggie Bone (l'homme qui avait déjà aperçu un " scaphandrier " sur la route, pendant la nuit de Noël).

" Nous revenions de Essex, la ville voisine, rapporta Reggie Bone aux policiers. Nous y avions disputé un match. Nous étions tous silencieux et plutôt de mauvaise humeur, car nos adversaires nous avaient battus sans difficulté. Soudain, à un détour de la route, nous aperçûmes cette chose, dans le noir du ciel. " Jamais je n'avais vu un avion voler aussi bas " déclara l'un des passagers. " Drôle d'avion " répondis-je... Il n'a pas l'air de bouger. "

Un Rayon de lumière

Quelques kilomètres plus loin, alors que nous traversions une petite vallée appelée Brushy Creek, l'objet réapparaissait, plus près de nous. Cette fois, nous arrêtâmes la voiture, pour mieux voir. La chose semblait suspendue dans l'air, à environ deux cents mètres de nous et ving mètres au-dessus du sol, et dirigeait vers la vallée un jet de lumière intense. Cette lumière, d'abord de couleur rouge, devint verte, puis ambre, puis blanche. Nous avons contemplé l'engin pendant cinq, dix minutes. Pour moi, il n'y avait aucun doute... (fin de mes archives sur ce sujet... il s'agit du magazine "Nostra" paru en mai 1973 à priori). Ces témoignages date du 21-02-1973. Mais voici la suite de cet article, trouvé sur internet ! :

"... L'appareil hésitait à se poser... puis, l'OVNI s'éleva sans bruit et disparut. "

La nuit suivante, un professeur de l'école de Piedmont, Roy Burch, sa femme, Beth, et sa soeur, Mme Kathy Keith, purent observer, à leur tour, la " soucoupe volante ".

Une Affaire très sérieuse

" Le matin, à l'école, Bone et les enfants nous avaient conté leur aventure. Je pus alors constater que bon nombre de gens avaient été témoins de phénomènes étranges du côté de Brushy Creek. Ce soir-là donc, je décidai d'aller voir, moi-même, ce qu'il en était. Nous explorâmes la vallée pendant plus d'une heure puis, ne voyant rien, décidâmes de rentrer à Piedmont. De retour à la maison, pourtant, la curiosité nous poussa à retourner une nouvelle fois d'où nous venions. Quelques kilomètres avant Brushy Creek, ma soeur nota une lumière, au-dessus d'une rangée d'arbres, du côté gauche de la route. Nous rangeâmes notre voiture et descendîmes : dans le ciel, un objet lumineux de couleur verte évoluais lentement. Nous l'avons observé pendant une quinzaine de minutes. Puis l'objet prit la direction du sud. Nous remontâmes immédiatement dans notre véhicule, et le suivîmes sur plusieurs kilomètres, aussi vite que nous le pouvions sur cette route escarpée. Enfin, nous arrivâmes à Brushy Creek. Là, plusieurs habitants de Piedmont étaient déjà arrêtés, et contemplaient l'engin. L'OVNI resta suspendu pendant une dizaine de minutes au-dessus de nos têtes, puis disparut. "

Quelques jours plus tard, au même endroit, un groupe d'étudiants de l'Université du Missouri assistait au même phénomène.

Tous ces témoignages, ajoutés à des dizaines d'autres, vont aujourd'hui permettre à l'équipe du Pr. Hynek d'établir un véritable " emploi du temps " des OVNI, lors de leurs visites dans la région de Piedmont, de décembre 1972 à mars 1973.

Une autre personnalité connue vient d'apporter sa collaboration au savant dans son enquête : Hayden C. Hewes, directeur du fameux "International UFO Bureau Inc.", fondé en 1957, chargé de passer au crible tous les témoignages concernant les OVNI, et d'éliminer les déclarations fantaisistes. Hayden C. Hewes s'est rendu sur les lieux des phénomènes, dans le Missouri, à plusieurs reprises, et a rencontré des dizaines de personnes. Son rapport, qui vient d'être publié aux USA, est formel : il s'agit là d'une des affaires d'OVNI les plus extraordinaires de ces dernières années, et, sûrement, la moins contestable : il est difficile, cette fois, de rejeter autant de témoignages émanant de personnages aussi divers, en invoquant une " hallucination collective ". L'attitude du gouvernement de l'Etat du Missouri, qui a officiellement fait appel à une commission d'enquête, démontre bien jusqu'à quel niveau l'affire a été prise au sérieux. J-L Ferrando pour Nostra 078 - 04-10-1973

Getting out of bed she looked out the window and saw a strange craft hovering over the utility wires. It had several lighted portholes and Edith thought she could see people or "objects" inside. Endroit : Mill Spring,  Missouri  Date 1973 Février 21 : 22H00 pendant une nuit de plusieurs autres lumières d'UFO à proximité, Mme Edith Boatwright se situait dans son lit quand elle a vu une lumière clignotante. Sortant du lit, elle a regardé hors de la fenêtre et a vu un engin étrange planer au-dessus des fils de service. Il avait plusieurs hublots allumés et Edith a pensé qu'elle pourrait voir des personnes ou des "objets" à l'intérieur. Il faisait un bruit swooshing tranquille. " 26 fevrier 1973 "Cigarette" UFO over Essex Another of those sightings of a distant object which so frequently turn out to be misidentifications was reported in the Colchester Evening Gazette of Monday, February 26, 1973: "Housewife Elsie Long . . . got up early on Saturday morning to put the dog out, when a bright light in the sky caught her eye. "'IL was a cigarette shape and very bright,' said Elsie, of South Close, Halstead. "'It was stationary for about five minutes. Then the tait faded and it moved off slowly. It seemed to be spinning very fast by the way it caught the sun,' she said. " '1 know it wasn't a plane or a heli-copter, 1 just don't know what it was. 1 have always been interested in reading other people's scories of UFOs but this is the only one I have ever seen.' "After the object disappeared she went back to bed and told her husband what she had seen. 'He just laughed,' she * * * The Colchester Evening Gazette of February 27, 1973, printed two confirming reports by un-named witnesses, one of whom, a woman pensioner, stated that the early morning object was coloured a bright yellow. Then, on March 2, 1973, the same newspaper published a letter from a Mr. G. W. F. Ennew, of The Avenue, Wivenhoe: "1 was not surprised when I read o Mrs Long's sighting of a UFO around 7 am. 1 was in Marks Tey on the same morning. "The object I saw was in the east, and I just couldn't keep my eyes off it. "It was a most beautiful golden colour, which I kept sight of for ail of 15 minutes. When I first saw it, it seemed like a massive saucer flat on its back, then it appeared to corne upright, the sun's reflection apparently giving it a cigarette shape, confirming what Mrs Long saw. 21 fevrier et 22 mars Missouri UFO Still on Scene The "shy UFO" has again been report¬ed in Piedmont, Mo. Dozens of residents of this small valley town located in southeastern Missouri are demanding an explanation to the light or lights they have been observing sporadi¬cally for more than two months. (See UFO Investigator, April 1973.) Since the first sighting on Feb. 21, 1973, the number of citizens who have spotted one or more bright, multicolored lights hovering, looping, or passing swiftly overhead continues to grow. More than 25 "multiple-witness sight¬ings" have been recorded, with one of them occurring during daylight outside of Piedmont. Two students et Southeast Missouri State College claim they were driving toward the town on March 22 at 4:30 p.m. when they spotted an object glistening in the sun. According to the students, it was metallic in color, moved rapidiy, and had an oval-shaped bottom. Other Piedmont residents say they have seen an object "about 30 feet in diameter." Dennis Keeney, a radio station an¬nouncer for KPWB, said he was driving his car one evening in March when "the thing appeared right in front of me. I stopped the car in the middle of the road. It appeared to have a tripod on top that spinned. The lights were like an electric welding torch." Keeney said he was able to snap a Polaroid picture of the object, but the print showed only a small white bail with blue rings and a long hazy tait. avr-73 21/02/1973 18 piedmont missouri The Piedmont, Missouri Mess At about the middle of February, 1973, residents in and around Piedmont, Missouri began witnessing st range and unusual flying lights and objects which ca used considerable co nsternation, mainly because few of them had evergiven much thought to UFOs prior to their ex periences. Information emanating from anot her APRO member in the area of Piedmont indicates that more detailed and spectacular sightings have taken place but that in view of the publicity, the people involved have not made reports public. Efforts are being made at this time to obtain these reports and if APRO is successful , the details will be made public in future issues of the Bulletin. The most spectacular of the Piedmont s igh ti ngs (inve s tigated by Field Investiga tors Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Smit h) involved the experience of Mr. Reggie Bone, who is basketball coach for the Piedmont High School. At approximately 8:30 p.m. on the 21st of February 1973, Mr. Bone and five of his players were returning to Piedmont after having lost a regional basketball game. They had just tu rned orr Highway 60 onto Route 21 when 'he Coach and the boys noticed bright lights in the sky. Deciding that they must have been helicopter lights they continued toward Piedmont. When they arrived at the intersection of Route 21 and Highway 34 one of the boys noliced the same bright lighu again , only this time the ligh ts were sitt ing still at an estima ted SO feel alt itude and approximately 200 yards from the road. Bone then stopped the car and turned off the engine and lights. He and the hoys gol out of the car to gel a close r look at what they at the time believed to be a helicopter in trouble. What they saw was four lights of different colors: white, amber, blue and red. They were flashing and rotati ng bu t apparently not in any particular sequence. Due to the brightness of the light~ the group was not able to discern the shape of the object behi nd the lights (if there was one). Thc six individuals Piedmont (Conlinued from Page One) observed the Iignts for approximately 13 minutes during wnich time the objects did not move or make any sound. At the end of that period tne lights began to rise straight up at high speed, then stopped and headed toward the tree line and disappeared behind a hill. The night was clear, there was no wind or moon, and the temperature was approximately 45 degrees. Some of the more interesting cases follow : At about 4:30 p.m. on the 22nd of March, 1973, Mr. Ron Miller and Joe King were enroute from Southeast • PAGE 3 Missouri State University, east of Patterson in Wayne County on Missouri Sta te Highway 34. They observed a metallic-looking object wroch appeared to reflect the sunlight. They stopped the car to get a better look, glanced away for a second and when tney looked back the object was gone. Another most interesting sighting was made by Mrs. Margorie Cundiff, manager of the Piedmon t Country Club. Sunday, May 25th, was a misty day and at just after 12 noon Mrs. Cundiff was driving across the dam, happened to look out across the lake to check the water level because of the large amount of rain the area had recently received . She suddenly noted a "fast movement" and waves, and thought someone was water-skiing. Then a "flat, square-topped object" came up out of the water, and made a big turn. Her description in Mr. Sexton's column does not say what exactly happened to the object, whether it continued down the channel or if it took to the air. A few nights later, Mrs. Cundiff said, she was awakened by her dogs growling. She said she put them out and they started barking angrily. Looking out, she noticed a strange light and decided to drive out and see what it was. She drove down by the dam, whereupon her car radio ceased to fUnction. She drove off the dam, she said, and a quarter of a mile down the road the radio began to play again. In an interview with radio station KPWB in Piedmont, Earl Turnbaugh said that he observed a cone-shaped object hovering about 40 feet above a field near Brushy Creek, south of Piedmont on the night of March 14. The object was visible only during lighting flashes and a rod was seen protruding from the top of it, according to Turnbaugh. In the early stages of the activity a self-proclaimed UFO "expert" arrived upon the scene and by the time he departed he had succeeded in frightening the local populace by regaling them with tales of dead and maimed people who had been victims of UFOs. Mr. Kim Sexton, writing in the Independence, Missouri Examiner devoted a three-part series to the situation in Piedmont, and was quite candid in his description of the "expert". At the end of the first in the series Mr. Sexton said: "Some persons seem to take adva ntage of the fears of the community. I have found on two UFO research missions. Read tomorrow about "UFOlogists" who live comfortably at no charge when a panic-stricken community reaches out to them." 21 fevrier 1973 'Shy LIFO' Seen in Missouri A high school basketball coach and five members of his team were among the first to spot what the residents of Piedmont, Mo., now call the "shy UR)." At least a dozen residents of this com-munity, located approximately 135 miles south of St. Louis, have reportedly seen the UFO. They cail it "shy" because it only appears on dark nights and zooms away before anyone can get close to it. The object has reportedly followed cars along Route 49, illuminating the high¬way in front of them. The first sighting occurred Feb. 21 when Coach Reg Bone of Clearwater High School and five members of his team were returning from a basketball tournament in Essex. According to Bone, he was driving along U.S. 60 near Elsinoro when he and his passengers saw a bright shaft of light beaming down out of the sky. As the car pulled off onto Route 49, one of the boys yelled out, "There's the thing we saw back on Highwai 60." Bone stopped the car on the shoulder of the highway and got out to observe the "bright but silent abject." "It looked like it was about 50 feet off the ground and maybe 200 yards a¬way — it was impossible to determine the size or shape because of the darkness. Anyway, we ail saw four lights like maybe coming— from porthores red, green, amber, and white. We figured they were about three or four feet apart, ail in a row." One of Bone's players, Cary Barks, said, "We stood there and watched it for five to tan minutes. Thon it went direct¬ly up in the air with absolutely no noise and just disappeared over a hill." Word of the sighting spread quickly in the community, and the next night three aduit citizens of the tocan also re¬ported observing an 'abject with blinking white, green, amber, and red lights, "Red seemed to predorninate," said one of the adults, "A11 of a sudden it started bouncing around, and the lights started blinking again." Le Pr. Harley D. Rutledge, Ph.D., qui était directeur du département de physique de l'université d'état du sud-est du Missouri à Cape Girardeau, décida d'enquêter. Le Pr Rutledge monta une équipe d'observateurs avec des télescopes Questar, des équipements de contrôle de fréquence sophistiqués et des appareils photos. Il surnomma son effort de recherche "Projet Identification" et produisit plus tard en 1981 un livre sur la question : Quelles étaient ces lumières dans le ciel qui semblaient imiter les étoiles, les hélicoptères et les avions ?
Le Pr Rutledge appela une partie du phénomène des « pseudo-étoiles ». Les pseudo-étoiles, dit il, étaient des lumières simulant les étoiles camouflées par les constellations familières de vraies étoiles. Mais les pseudo-étoiles bougeaient et le Projet Identification captura leur mouvement furtif sur des photos en accéléré.

Certains objets brillants ressemblaient à des feux d'avion clignotants normaux. Tandis que d'autres lumières étranges, mystérieuses, semblaient violer les lois connues de la physique de la Terre comme si elles étalaient leurs extraordinaires aptitudes de vol. Mais ce qui intrigua le plus le Pr Rutledge, ce fut ces lumières dans le ciel qui semblaient répétitivement réagir aux membres du Projet Identification qui observaient les lumières.
